If you want long hair, you can’t go fast enough with hair growth. But it is not uncommon to get the feeling that hair tends to prefer the snail’s pace. Is that really the case? How fast do hairs grow on average? And can hair growth be accelerated with best round brush? Read answers to these and other questions about hair growth here.
How hair grows
Hair is horn threads. Like fingernails and toenails, they are made of keratin. The motor for hair growth is the hair bulb. The core of the bulb is the hair papilla – a real “horn factory”. Even the smallest blood vessels supply it with nutrients that make the hair sprout. Hair does not grow continuously, but in each follicle phases of growth, rest and regression alternate.
This hair cycle is controlled by hormones, growth factors and genes. Each follicle follows its own hair cycle, which is staggered from that of the neighbouring follicles. One hair grows, the other rests, while the next prepares for loss. This asynchronous hair growth ensures that a person always has enough hair on his head – unless he is affected by increased hair loss.
The hair cycle is divided into three phases that are constantly repeated:
Growth (anagen phase)
The hair root nourishes the hair and it grows. About 85 to 90 percent of the hair is in this active state, which lasts about three to seven years. How many years hair growth lasts is determined by heredity.
Transition (catagen phase)
In the hair root, processes of transformation take place and the hair is no longer supplied with nutrients. About one to three percent of the hair is in this stage, which lasts about three weeks. The hair root gradually becomes horny.
Rest and rejection (telogen phase)
The anchorage of the hair becomes looser and looser. Even slight mechanical stress such as combing, brushing, shampooing or the thrust of the regrowing hair is enough to cause the hair to fall out. The phase lasts two to four months, after which the hair is separated from the root. In this phase of rejection, 12 to 15 percent of the hair is present.
How long does it take for hair to grow?
How fast the individual hair grows varies from person to person. On average, however, one can assume hair growth per month at about twelve millimetres (or 1.2 centimetres). If you want your hair to grow long, you need to be patient.
Can hair growth be promoted?
People have always tried all sorts of herbs, ointments and tinctures to stimulate hair growth and speed up hair growth. But until today there is no remedy that noticeably accelerates hair growth. If at all, certain substances such as caffeine accelerate hair growth to a limited extent.
Let your hair grow faster – household remedies
Some household remedies are also said to make hair grow faster. However, this effect has not been scientifically proven. Popular household remedies – which are particularly intended to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp and thus hair growth – include apple vinegar, herbs such as nettle, sage and rosemary. They are diluted in water or applied to the hair as a decoction, massaged well into the scalp and rinsed out again after a few minutes.
Tips for long hair
How do hair grow faster? No question – if you want to get long hair as quickly as possible, you should eat healthy and maintain the hair thoroughly so that they stay healthy and not break off due to splitting.
