A Bathroom Mini-Improvement
Posted by Laura on Thursday Sep 24, 2009 Under Home Improvement, The HomesteadBack in 1995, when we were searching for our first home to purchase, there were many unique features about this house, that gave us reason to fall in love with it, and seal the deal. The loft, that overlooked the living space (now gone) w/ the ladder that led to it, the kitchen floor cabinets with roll out shelves, the bathroom with the separate vanity area, the bubble shower door on a central turn-style pole (which proved to be inefficient for bathing toddlers…and later, teaching children how to shower…..but it’ll be going back on soon.) for the steam shower, and these built in bathroom shelves………….

I loved these shelves in the bathroom. I loved the big top display shelf, and the shelf with the glass face, that was once very convenient for holding lots of tub toys. It’s all only recently been painted white. The shelves were already white, with the back wall a natural cedar wood, as the opposite walls still are. But when I decided the white shelves needed re-painting with a fresh coat of white, and got some, and then some more, white paint on the cedar wall…….well, you can see where I went from there. : ) I liked it though! It freshened up the bathroom.
But despite how I loved the look of the shelves, there was something about the location of them that really bothered me, and more-so every year. While we are in the habit of closing the lid before we flush….not all visitors are. I was always cleaning those shelves, and the bottles and tubes they held, from what I could not see, but feared lingered there. As I was cleaning, the lower I got in the shelves, the more hee-bee-gee-bees I got.

Not only that, but the clutter was getting to me. Not that it was a real wreck, but if everything wasn’t faced properly, it bothered me. And to be honest, I am the only compulsive-product-face-forward-placer in the household. (Hey, I used to work at CVS when I was in art school in my early twenties.). Besides, did anyone really need to see our Lysol air deodorizer can? Probably not.
So…..like always, I dreamed myself up a lovely door, described it to a T to a handsome handy-man I knew, and put him on the job………

I am thrilled with my new door. With a framed bead-board face, wooden knob, and magnetic closure, I think it’s charming. The bathroom looks tidier already. And we have a new place to conveniently store fresh rolls of toilet paper, as well.
It’s these little home things that make me smile. And also make me so excited to share with you, that I’ll even take photos of my bathroom, and post them!

Those little things are certainly the best! If only my handsome man was a little more handy! I have SO many of those ideas but never enough time or know-how to put them into place…..a girl can dream though!

Love it! AND — I want to hear more about the old shower door. I can’t get a visual in my head.
